Text For The Tower
The UConn Marching Band has been selected as one of the 18 university student organizations to take part in the UConn Foundation’s Ignite competition for the second year in a row. Ignite is a nationally recognized crowd-funding competition that offers UConn student groups a chance at $27,000 in incentive prizes. It will run through April 6, 2014, with winners announced on April 17.
Unlike traditional crowdfunding campaigns, which often reward only projects that reach a specific goal, all donations to teams competing in Ignite go toward their UConn Foundation fund. The team to gain the highest number of students and young alumni (2003-2013 graduates) donors will win an additional $10,000 for their fund.
Last year, the UCMB came in 5th place with 190 Donors, and received $1,838.00 in donations, plus $2,000 in prize funds. This year the band hopes to top 300 donors. Only the top three runner-ups receive additional funding.
The prizes are made available to the teams through the generosity of alumni David Barton ’61 and Adam Schwartz ’97. It is Barton’s fourth year supporting student philanthropy efforts through his giving. Schwartz’s gift this year will specifically support prizes for student team marketing efforts and the creation of a solicitation video contest.
All donations made to the UCMB’s Ignite fund (and additional prize money) will be used to construct a rehearsal observation tower at the band field. The project is estimated to cost about sixty thousand dollars. The dean of the School of Fine Arts has already allocated twenty thousand dollars towards the project, but the UCMB is responsible to raise the remaining funds.
Making a donation to the UCMB Ignite fund is as easy as sending a text. Those wishing to support the fund can text “uconn band” to 50555 to make a $10.00 donation instantly*. In addition, students should include their name and peoplesoft number and alumni should include their name and grad year in the text message. For example, “uconn band John Doe 1234567” or “uconn band Jane Doe 96”. Donations can also be made through the UCMB’s Ignite giving page at ignite2014.kintera.org/ucmbtowerfund.
